During a free seminar held Feb. 20 at Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital, community members learned directly from physicians about the causes, prevention strategies and treatment options available for managing back and neck pain.

Specialists from the Houston Methodist Spine Center at Clear Lake – Drs. Alden Newcomb (Orthopedic Spine Surgery), Haris Vakil (Primary Care Sports Medicine) and Heather Colmenter (Pain Medicine) – led the discussion and outlined key points, including:

  • The role of spinal structure and risk factors such as aging, posture and physical strain in contributing to back pain.
  • Treatment options including minimally invasive procedures, targeted injections and non-surgical methods.
  • How physical therapy can strengthen the spine, improve mobility and manage chronic pain.
  • When to consider surgery and news of recent advancements in surgical techniques.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, giving attendees the opportunity to ask physicians questions specific to their concerns.

“Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care, and it’s a condition that affects nearly every aspect of daily life,” said Dr. Vakil. “Unfortunately, it’s also a leading cause of reduced quality of life for those suffering from chronic or acute pain. Our aim in providing this seminar was to provide clear, evidence-based guidance so patients can understand their condition and take proactive steps toward recovery.”
