Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is pleased to announce the opening of its new Advanced Wound Care Clinic – another important step forward in the hospital’s commitment to bring new services and expert care to Fort Bend and surrounding counties.

Located on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus in Medical Office Building 3, suite 150, the Advanced Wound Care Clinic provides state-of-the-art care for non-healing wounds through proven wound care practices and advanced clinical approaches.

More than 6 million people in the United States suffer from chronic wounds caused by diabetes, vascular disorders, traumatic injuries, pressure sores, surgeries and other conditions that slow down the body’s healing process.

“The treatment of chronic wounds is a rapidly growing need here in Fort Bend,” said Chris Siebenaler, CEO of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.  “Our new service will play an important role in improving the quality of life of patients suffering from wounds that require the highest level of care.”

The Advanced Wound Care Clinic’s team of wound care physicians, nurses and medical professionals will develop a customized approach for each patient, one designed to address the patient’s overall health and lifestyle.

“Non-healing wounds are often associated with inadequate circulation, poorly functioning veins and immobility,” said Dr. Nicholas Desai, DPM, Medical Director of the Advanced Wound Care Clinic.   “These types of wounds occur most frequently in the elderly and in people with diabetes – populations that are sharply rising as the nation ages and chronic diseases increase.  In order to develop successful treatment plans, we must take into consideration each patient’s underlying condition and unique medical needs.  Our collaborative approach enables us to work directly with the patient’s physician and other departments within the hospital to deliver wound care quickly and effectively.”

In addition to a highly trained and knowledgeable staff, the Advanced Wound Care Clinic will benefit from the latest technological advancements in wound care.  For example, the center will house two new hyperbaric chambers for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy – a safe and evidence-based treatment proven to speed the healing process in certain types of wounds. During the treatments, the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen inside a pressurized chamber, quickly increasing the concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream, where it is delivered to a patient's wound site for faster healing.

“Essentially, hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps heal the wound from the inside out,” Dr. Desai said. “This therapy can help reduce swelling, fight infection and build new blood vessels, ultimately producing healthy tissue.”
