Houston Methodist Clear Lake hosts National Cancer Survivors Day event
Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital is hosting a Celebration of Life for cancer survivors on Friday, May 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the West Building Conference Room at 2035 Space Park Drive.
The National Cancer Survivors Day event will include several guest speakers – including local survivors, physicians from Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Clear Lake and other caregivers – with a focus on living with a history of cancer. Lunch will be served.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate life and living and the remarkable courage that survivors demonstrate that inspires us all,” said Jitesh Joshi, M.D., a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist with the Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Clear Lake. “We invite everyone who has fought and defeated cancer to join us as we recognize and honor their journey.”
The number of cancer survivors continues to grow in the U.S., thanks to early detection and improved treatment options. According to the National Cancer Institute, there are approximately 16.9 million cancer survivors in the U.S. today – a number that could reach 22 million over the next decade.
“Thanks to advances in medical care, we are seeing dramatic improvements in survivorship across a range of cancers,” said Twisha Verma, M.D., a board-certified radiation oncologist with Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Clear Lake. “Helping survivors heal emotionally is a major component of care today. An event like our National Cancer Survivors Day celebration brings together individuals who share a unique experience, which can foster hope and encouragement. It’s a special gathering.”
The event is free and open to local cancer survivors, who are encouraged to bring one guest. RSVPs are required; to register, go to houstonmethodist.org/events or call 281.333.8899. Free parking is also available.
