Returning to activities
A concussion causes changes in brain function that may last 24 hours to 10 days or longer in certain cases. During this time, the brain is vulnerable to more severe or permanent injury. It is important to rest and return to activity gradually. Most athletes who experience a concussion can recover completely if they follow a personalized treatment plan.
Physical and mental rest is essential to help the brain heal, and is especially important for younger athletes to avoid the risk of suffering a second concussion before the first has completely healed.
Stages of recovery
After a concussion, most patients can gradually return to activity as symptoms decline. Returning too soon increases the risk of secondary injury and permanent brain damage.
