Throughout the year, the Houston area is filled with many types of pollens and mold spores that can leave you feeling miserable and desperate for relief from your allergy symptoms. The key to finding that relief, according to Houston Methodist Primary Care doctors, is to stay ahead of your allergen exposure.

Here are a few ways you can minimize your allergen exposure:

There’s an app for that.

There are many different phone apps and websites you can use to monitor Houston-area allergen levels. It’s much easier to limit your exposure or stay indoors when you are able keep track of high-allergen activity.

Kiss the pollen goodbye.

If you mow your lawn or enjoy gardening, try wearing a protective mask. You also should shower immediately after finishing your yard work and throw your clothes in the washing machine. It’s important to remove all the pollens and grass you collected while working outdoors.

Take a breath of fresh air.

High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (HEPA) filters may improve your home’s air quality — just make sure to change them regularly. And, because rugs and carpets collect allergens as well, go with bare floors, if possible. Regular dusting of mini blinds and fans can help, too.

Wash away the day.

It’s a good idea to bathe before bed to remove allergens from your hair and body. Also, make sure you wash your bedding twice a week in hot water to prevent a buildup of allergens, including dust mites, which affect some people.

Keep the outside out.

In the car (and at home), keep your windows up and make sure your air conditioner is recirculating the air, rather than drawing it in from outside. And change your cabin air filter at least once a year or as suggested by your owner’s manual.
