Houston Methodist Physician Organization
What Is the Physician Organization?
As one of the nation’s leading hospitals and academic medical centers, Houston Methodist is home to some of the most talented and experienced providers in the country— whose collective goal is to provide outstanding patient-centered care. Everything we do is focused on unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation, while keeping in mind our I CARE values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence. We employ more than 1,800 clinicians — comprised of mid-level providers, APPs and physicians in our unique Physician Organization — at more than 265 practice locations across the Greater Houston area.

The Houston Methodist Physician Organization is comprised of two distinct entities: Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group and Houston Methodist Primary Care Group. Our distinction between the two is intentional, ensuring that primary care has its own voice among our specialty doctors. And, with more than 250 doctors and advanced practice providers (APPs), it is one of the largest employed primary care groups in the Houston area — completely physician-run and with its own dedicated Board of Directors.
Our specialists are at the forefront of research, developing leading-edge technologies and treatments and teaching the medical pioneers of tomorrow. The combination of clinical service, research and academics ensures patients have access to the latest treatments and technologies while providing the best comprehensive patient care.

Investing in our physicians so they can invest in patients.
“The overarching goal of our Physician Organization is to give our physicians a supportive environment, resources and opportunities that allow them to deliver the highest possible quality of care to our patients. Our high level of physician satisfaction ultimately translates into great patient outcomes. We invest in our physicians so that they can invest in our patients — all leading to a healthier world.” — Shlomit Schaal, MD, PhD, MHCM, President and CEO Houston Methodist Physician OrganizationWhat Does It Mean to Be Part of the Physician Organization?
The Physician Organization is a home for doctors and APPs who are well-aligned with Houston Methodist’s mission of providing the highest-quality health care and who share our vision and core values of I CARE, innovation and commitment to unparalleled excellence. Not only is our Accountable Care Organization (ACO) one of the top performing in the country, leading to extraordinary results for patients, 96% of our physicians are proud to work at Houston Methodist — much of that due to the Physician Organization and what it has to offer doctors.

Innovations That Benefit Our Doctors, APPs and Their Practices
Houston Methodist prioritizes cutting-edge innovations that make our doctors’ and APPs’ lives easier — so they can focus their time providing better care for our patients. Some of the ways we do this include:
- Employing ambient technology and real-time remote patient monitoring, as well as collecting patient vital signs using wearable technology
- Redesigning high-efficiency clinics of the future, featuring self-control scheduling and self-check-in
- Creating hospital rooms with smart technologies, including digital whiteboards (medication times, discharge and care team information), voice-controlled room controls (lighting, nurse call, food ordering), patient-engagement TVs and virtual-medicine-enabled rooms that connect clinicians with their patients — anytime, anywhere
- Committing to continuous process improvement, where we are constantly evolving and pivoting, such as using technology to streamline the prescription refill process for doctors and APPs
