Adult Type 1 Diabetes Center
Approximately 30,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes each year, half of whom are adults. More than 75 percent of people with type 1 diabetes are 18 years or older. Our Adult Type 1 Diabetes Center uses the latest technology to provide individualized care for patients with type 1 diabetes and prevent these complications:
- Blindness
- End-stage kidney disease
- Lower extremity amputation
- Cardiovascular disease
Transplant Endocrinology and Hospital Glucose Control Program
Diabetes and transplant specialists at Houston Methodist have created screening tools for early identification of patients at risk for new onset diabetes after transplant. Interventions during the posttransplant period are aimed to reduce the risk of organ rejection.
Inpatient Diabetes Program
The health care professionals at our Inpatient Diabetes Program provide safe and effective glucose management for diabetic patients requiring hospitalization. The comprehensive program ranges from the patient’s bedside to after hospital discharge and includes introduction of the self-management program described below.
Diabetes Self-Management Program for Adolescents and Adults
The diabetes self-management program promotes your ability to manage diabetes through:
- An overview of diabetes and how it affects your body
- Designs for individualized plan of care through diet, exercise and medication
- Guidance in controlling blood glucose and avoiding complications
