Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH), Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine, in Houston, Texas, offers a one-year ACGME accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship. The option is available for a two-year fellowship combining Clinical Informatics (1 year) with Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine (1 year).
HMH is part of the Houston Methodist Hospital System (Houston Methodist) which includes eight hospitals in the greater Houston area. Houston Methodist has more than 2,700 beds and continues to expand in the Houston metroplex. HMH is located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center (TMC) and is the 1000-bed flagship quaternary care hospital of HM. HMH is a US News & World Report Honor Roll hospital, has been continuously ranked as the number 1 hospital in Texas, and is ranked #2 this year as a Best Large Employer in the nation by Forbes. The Houston metroplex is a cosmopolitan community of 7.2 million and is the most ethnically diverse city in the United States.
The fellow will be trained with in-depth experiences in all aspects of the specialty including blood banking, transfusion, apheresis, and donor services. HMH, our primary teaching hospital, provides transfusion medicine support for all specialties including cardiovascular surgery, transplant surgery, and oncology. The apheresis service is a high patient-volume service offering both exchange procedures and hematopoietic progenitor cell collections including stem cell and CAR-T cell. The fellow will also learn about recruitment, collections, and manufacturing blood component at our on-site blood donor center. In addition, the fellow will be involved in providing blood bank expertise and collaborative projects across the system community hospitals. Through these experiences, the fellow will gain the knowledge and skills to confidently serve as a content expert and provide guidance across a hospital system. The fellow will also rotate at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Texas Children's Hospital, and at HMH Coagulation and HLA laboratories for additional subspecialty exposures. The Houston Methodist Research Institute provides opportunities for translational and interdisciplinary research. The fellow is encouraged to participate in research projects and publish with access to internal funding. Additionally, the fellow is sponsored to attend two national meetings and encouraged to participate in national committees. This training program will equip the graduating fellow with the full array of necessary experiences to meet the challenges of practicing and serving in the role as medical director in blood banking and transfusion medicine in any academic or community hospital system.
