Curriculum

Clinical Rotations

Our program is structured into a 4+1 model. We feel that this structure provides several benefits for residents, including increasing outpatient continuity for with individual patient panels and one preceptor, reducing conflict between inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, and providing decompression between inpatient rotations for reduced resident stress and work hours. This model also allows for consistent access to subspecialty clinics, research, and completion of administrative tasks.

General Medicine Inpatient Service

Residents will complete about eight months of inpatient wards throughout their training. General medicine inpatient ward rotations will take place at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital and residents will take care of patients in a geographic cohort on a dedicated medicine floor. Residents will experience increasing autonomy throughout their training and will benefit from appropriate direct supervision and daily teaching by attending physicians. Residents will have the opportunity to take care of a wide variety of patients and diverse pathology in the inpatient setting.

Each team will consist of one teaching attending, one upper-level resident (PGY2 or PGY3), two interns, and a potential medical student. Upper-level residents will be responsible for supervision of interns, teaching, and team leadership.

Continuity Clinic

Houston Methodist serves as one of the major primary care providers to patients in The Woodlands, Montgomery, Conroe, and the surrounding areas. Residents will have the opportunity to rotate for one week every month at a Primary Care Clinic, working one-on-one with a single preceptor throughout their three years and building their own panel of patients. During their ambulatory week, residents will see their continuity clinic patients in the morning and have the opportunity to provide frequent follow-up care for their patient panel throughout their three years of training. They will have two afternoons dedicated to experiencing their choice of subspecialty clinic to help determine their future career path. Residents will also have a dedicated half day to work on their research projects, and a half day for completion of administrative tasks, such as following up lab results and emails for clinic patients.
