Sports Physical Therapy Residency - Houston Methodist The Woodlands

Mission

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital’s Sports Physical Therapy Residency’s mission is to provide an unparalleled opportunity for quality advancement in sports and orthopedic clinical training by facilitating professional and clinical growth within a culture of Houston Methodist’s I CARE values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence to enhance patient care.

Overview

The Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital Sports Physical Therapy Residency will be a 14 to 15 month program beginning in June of each year. The program consists of an intensive combination of didactic lectures and lab sessions each week and six module exams to test the retention of knowledge. Residents will receive the highest quality of one-on-one mentoring from a faculty that consists of Board-Certified Sports and Orthopedic Specialists, and Fellows of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. Residents will get ample experience and understanding of sports rehabilitation and management in the outpatient clinic, athletic training room and on the sideline for sporting events. Throughout the program, residents will carry a near-full patient case load to facilitate independence of practice and development of advanced skills acquired from the curriculum. The program curriculum is designed to challenge and advance the residents’ sports and orthopedic skills in:

  • Examination
  • Evaluation
  • Diagnosis
  • Prognosis
  • Intervention
  • Return to Activity/Sport
  • Health & Wellness & Prevention

This program’s intensity and curriculum is designed to best equip the resident with the necessary qualifications and knowledge to sit for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) Sports Certified Specialist Examination.

ABPTRFE has granted the Houston Methodist The Woodlands Sports Residency candidacy status. Candidacy status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Achieving candidacy status is not an indication that ABPTRFE will grant initial accreditation. Participants who graduate from a program in candidacy status are not deemed to have completed an accredited program.
