Sports Physical Therapy Residency - Houston Methodist Baytown
Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital Sports Physical Therapy is intended for physical therapists seeking to expand their skills, knowledge, professional network in the realm of sports physical therapy. The program is designed with a combination of clinical training, on-field experience, and didactic class work that will challenge/propel the resident to become an advanced practitioner in sports physical therapy. As a graduate, the resident will have gained the skills and knowledge to excel as a clinician, while performing evidence-based treatments that advance the profession of physical therapy and continue to make Houston Methodist a leader in the care of the sports population.
The Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital Sports Physical Therapy Residency is a 12 to 15 month program, beginning in August of each year, at a hospital-based outpatient facility focused on the sports population. The program will offer the resident clinical, didactic, and on-field experienced centered on sports physical therapy for patients of all levels. Residents will receive 1:1 mentorship from board certified Sports and Orthopedics Specialist that is integrated into patient care. Residents will also carry a 32 hour per week patient case-load, allowing for independent learning through experience and application of skills.
In the didactic portion of the residency, residents will receive evidenced-based instruction on the acute care of an injured athlete, the prevention of injuries in the sports population, the rehabilitation of the athlete, and the performance of clinical research for the athletic population. Residents will be given the opportunity to work alongside world-class orthopedic surgeons, primary care sports medicine physicians, and experienced athletic trainers to allow for development of ability to work within an interdisciplinary team focused on the health of the athlete.

Goals
- Provide a learning environment consisting of didactic study and clinical experience to prepare the resident to be an advanced clinician and perform patient-centered, evidence-based care of the athletic population.
- Provide on-field sports coverage experience with local sports teams for a variety of sports and level of athletes.
- Obtain ABPTS board certification in sports physical therapy.
- Develop the resident into a well rounded sports physical therapist that displays Houston Methodist ICARE values and is prepared to be a leader in sports physical therapy.
