Rotation Description
Medical students participate in a 4 week inpatient and outpatient clinical clerkship under the Houston Methodist Urology Department, utilizing the clinical services of the Houston Methodist Hospital and the departments various clinics. On the inpatient side, students will scrub into complex surgical cases with both physicians and residents throughout their rotation and they will accompany residents during daily attending rounds and morning report. Students will be expected to assist with weekend call for two days during their rotation.
On the outpatient side students will have an opportunity to work with each of our nine providers in their specialty clinics including Men’s Health Clinic, the Stone Clinic and the Neurourology Transition Clinic. Students will participate in all clinical and teaching activities of the service including Grand Rounds, research updates, Journal Clubs, and lecture series. Students will be expected to review all components of the AUA Medical Student Curricula and provide a lecture and a PowerPoint presentation lasting approximately 10-15 minute on the topic of the student’s choice at the end of the rotation during one of our various conferences.
Rotations Offered
Spring rotation
- March 3rd, 2025 - May 30th, 2025
Fall rotation
- June 30th, 2025 - October 31st, 2025
If selected for either the Spring or Fall rotation, you will need to submit a MERLIN application through Houston Methodist. Please note that this application requires the following: a TB skin test, flu vaccination, drug test, and background check. All required items cannot be over two years old, as previous records will not be accepted. Ensure these are up to date to successfully finalize your application. The MERLIN course modules must also be completed to finalize your application and begin your onboarding process.
Application Process
All students applying must use the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) for the initial application and to submit preference dates for your rotation. You must have completed the Surgery rotation prior to beginning our rotation. Your application must include the following:
- USMLE Step 1
- Medical School Transcript
- One letter of recommendation
- Curriculum vitae
- Personal Statement explaining why you would like to complete your rotation at Houston Methodist Urology (1 -2 paragraphs max). Please email this separately to Diana Benito.
