About the Fellowship
The Houston Methodist Transplant Hepatology Fellowship (ACGME #1584814001) is offering an opportunity to train among leaders in the field of transplant hepatology in one of the busiest liver transplant programs in the country. Houston Methodist is a 900-bed hospital with a dedicated Surgical Liver ICU for patients. Houston Methodist is ranked the No. 1 hospital in Texas, top 10 in the country, with a national ranking of No. 12 in Gastroenterology and GI surgery according to U.S. News & World Report.
The objective of the The Houston Methodist Transplant Hepatology Fellowship is to train highly competent hepatologists. Working throughout the J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center and paired with The Sherie and Alan Conover Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation, fellows will train in a diverse curriculum. All trainees will achieve a level of excellence in the areas of patient care, medical knowledge, communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and systems-based practice. A key component of this training includes fostering skills in treatment of end stage liver disease and the utilization of transplantation within the context of consultation and continuity of care. Trainees will interact with all other organ transplant teams and help to manage the liver issues that arise in other organ recipients.
The training program exposes fellows to all aspects of liver transplantation as well as hepatology patients throughout the spectrum of liver disease and transplantation. There are specialized transplant program for multiorgan transplantation (including amyloids, congenital heart, heart kidney, lung and pancreas transplantations). In the Conover center, there are programs for live donation liver transplantation, a machine perfusion program, transplant oncology clinic for patient with HCC and cholangiocarcinoma, a clinic for hepatitis C positive organ transplantation as well a dedicated clinic for metabolic liver disease. All fellows participate in clinical or basic research and thus the program goal is to afford the fellow an opportunity to explore a future career with either an investigative/teaching, clinical focus, or both.

Message from the Program Director
Welcome, and thank you for visiting the website of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at Houston Methodist. We are excited to share our program with you. We have continued growth in our liver transplant program where we performed the second most transplants in the nation for 2022. Houston Methodist itself is ranked among the country's top hospitals in 10 specialties in U.S. News & World Report's 2022 "Best Hospitals" issue, ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Texas with a national ranking of No. 8 in Gastroenterology and GI surgery.
Our faculty members are experienced clinicians, educators, and clinical researchers with experience in all aspects of hepatology and transplant medicine. Our fellowship spans 12 clinical moths with both focused in and outpatient months. Our program is centered at Houston Methodist, a nearly 950 bed hospital with a dedicated surgical liver transplant ICU, specialized nursing units for transplant patients that complements our large multi-organ transplant programs. Our clinical team includes our faculty and gastroenterology fellows along with residents from the Houston Methodist Internal Medicine Residency and medical students from Texas A&M College of Medicine, from both the traditional program and our unique EnMed program.
The clinical training environment allows for a wealth of diverse clinical exposure, spanning the entire spectrum of hepatology from metabolic liver disease, hepatic malignancy, managing decompensated cirrhotic patients, perioperative transplant, and post-transplant patient care. Along with the inpatient rotations, a comprehensive experience in outpatient clinic, including continuity clinic at Houston Methodist liver cancer, general hepatology and posttransplant clinic post-transplant clinic. We have specialized exposure to programs for adult congenital heart related liver diseases, amyloidosis, and obesity related liver disease.
Our program participates in the NRMP match with applications through ERAS. We offer a traditional three-year ACGME-accredited fellowship. We also offer a Transplant Hepatology Fellowship as a dual track, or as a separate fourth year.

Eligibility and Application
Thank you for your interest in the Houston Methodist Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program. For the 2024 recruitment cycle, all applicants will be interviewed virtually.
Applications must be processed through the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). Paper applications are not accepted. All applications are carefully reviewed, and selected applicants are notified electronically if an interview is requested.
Pre-match positions are not offered.
Application Requirements
- Complete a AASLD application
- At least three other letters of recommendation
- Official medical school transcript
- Personal statement
- Graduate of a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school in the US or Canada, or an Educational Commission for Foreign (ECFMG) medical school outside the United States and Canada with a current valid ECFMG certificate
- Passing score on all USMLE steps and/or COMLEX-USA
- Graduate of an ACGME-accredited or RCPSC-accredited (Canadian) three-year internal medicine training program
- Graduate of an ACGME-accredited or RCPSC-accredited three-year gastroenterology training program (prior to starting the TH fellowship) or in good standing in the second year of fellowship at Houston Methodist Gastroenterology training program
- U.S. Citizen, foreign national with permanent U.S. residence, or J-1 visa

Responsibility
- Drug and Tobacco Screening- Job seekers will be tested for nicotine and drug usage during the post-offer physical. If a job seeker tests positive for nicotine use, including nicotine gum and patches, the offer will be rescinded, and individuals will be given the opportunity to participate in a free Houston Methodist-provided tobacco cessation program. Job seekers wishing to reapply after testing positive for nicotine may do so 90 days after the date the initial offer was rescinded. We recruit for one fellow per academic year. The program has two tracts: a one-year program to be completed after an AGME accredited Gastroenterology fellowship and a two plus one tract that is reserved for internal GI candidates after their second year of training at Houston Methodist. The fellow is selected from among eligible applicants on the basis of their ability, academic credentials, aptitude, communication skills, intellectual and humanistic qualities, personal attributes (such as motivation and integrity), preparedness, and their ability to benefit from the program. These qualities may be accessed through the review of academic records, letters of recommendation, standardized test scores and other means, including interviews.
