About the Fellowship

Welcome, and thank you for visiting the website of the Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program at Houston Methodist Hospital. Houston Methodist Hospital is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 hospital in Texas and one of America’s “Best Hospitals.”

The department of Rheumatology at Houston Methodist in Houston offers a 2 year, clinically based fellowship. This program is intended for Internal Medicine physicians who have completed 3 years of approved graduate training in Internal Medicine in the United States. The Rheumatology clinical program enjoys a wealth of diverse clinical expertise, spanning the entire spectrum of rheumatological diseases from musculoskeletal disorders to systemic autoimmune conditions and other rheumatologic diseases. A complete didactive curriculum that will provide fellows with the understanding of the fundamentals of rheumatologic conditions. We place emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach offering a variety of electives during the 2 year clinical training. This electives include but are not limited to osteoporosis, interstial lung disease and connective tissue diseases , sports medicine , dermatology , and pediatric rheumatology.

Eligibility and Application

Houston Methodist Hospital participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All positions are offered through the NRMP.

Applications must be processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Paper applications are not accepted. Information on ERAS can be found on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) website. All applications are carefully reviewed, and selected applicants are notified electronically through ERAS if an interview is requested.

"Pre-Match" positions are not offered.


Application Requirements
  • Complete a ERAS application form
  • At least three (3) other letters of recommendation; preferably, one of the letters should be from the chair of the department of medicine. All letters of recommendation should be current or within the last 2 years.
  • Official medical school transcript.
  • Personal statement.
  • A minimum score of 200 is required.
  • Graduation from medical school within the last 5 years.
  • Must have passed and completed all USMLE’s
  • Three years previous internal medicine residency training.
  • No H-1 visas. Only J-1 Visas are offered.

Responsibility
  • Drug and Tobacco Screening- Job seekers will be tested for nicotine and drug usage during the post-offer physical. If a job seeker tests positive for nicotine use, including nicotine gum and patches, the offer will be rescinded, and individuals will be given the opportunity to participate in a free Houston Methodist-provided tobacco cessation program. Job seekers wishing to reapply after testing positive for nicotine may do so 90 days after the date the initial offer was rescinded. If the job seeker tests positive for drug use, the offer will be rescinded. Job seekers wishing to reapply after the drug screening is positive may do so one year after the date the initial offer was rescinded.
  • Background Check - Prior to employment start date, job seekers must complete a criminal background check.
