Houston Methodist Hospital Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine, in Houston, Texas, offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship in clinical informatics. This fellowship is designed for physicians and physician scientists who have completed training and are interested in strengthening and specializing their skills in clinical informatics and related research and patient care activities. Houston Methodist Hospital is located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world. It is the center of a seven hospital, 2,000-bed system that performs more than 3.9 million billable tests annually. The hospital offers a full range of services from primary to tertiary care, including a multi-organ transplant center and cancer center.
Two two-year fellowship positions are available under the directorship of S. Wesley Long, MD, PhD. The Houston Methodist Hospital Clinical Informatics Fellowship will provide comprehensive training and experience in clinical informatics. Strengths of the program include the central role of academic informaticians from the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine in management of clinical laboratory data, and close collaboration with research and scholarship efforts of informatics-focused faculty in the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Fellows will work with faculty who are experts in their areas of interest throughout their fellowship. This close collaboration between the academic physicians and the fellows allows for an individually tailored experience in a wide variety of clinical areas, building on a firm foundation of academic clinical informatics education.
Didactics and hands-on experiential learning involve a wide variety of areas, including but not limited to electronic health records, laboratory information systems, databases, computing fundamentals, systems design, enterprise data warehouses, and project management. These education experiences are further enhanced by our close interaction with colleagues in the Information Technology division and hospital administration.
Fellows will attend informatics seminars both at Houston Methodist Hospital and within the Texas Medical Center, and will give clinical informatics presentations as part of monthly seminar series and grand rounds. In addition, fellows will complete a capstone project relevant to their area of focus. The capstone project is expected to result in a peer-reviewed publication.
