Houston Methodist Hospital Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine, in Houston, Texas, an affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College and Texas A&M Medical College, offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship in breast-gynecologic pathology for physicians who have completed pathology training and are interested in strengthening and specializing their skills in breast-gynecologic pathology and related research. Houston Methodist Hospital is located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world. It is the flagship hospital of a seven hospital, 2,000-bed system that offers a full range of services from primary to tertiary care, including a multi-organ transplant center and cancer center.

This breast-gynecologic pathology selective program has access to a large and diverse case volume, which reflects the broad spectrum of inpatients and outpatients at Houston Methodist. The system has a very active breast and gynecologic service, including oncologic services. Approximately 2,600 breast biopsies, 1,000 breast surgical resection cases, 2,000 gynecologic biopsies, 3,700 gynecologic surgical specimens, and 21,590 Pap tests are reviewed at Houston Methodist annually. In addition, cytologic and gynecologic study sets are available for additional review by the fellow.

A single one-year fellowship position is available each academic year under the directorship of Michael Deavers, MD. In addition to receiving advanced training in breast and gynecologic pathology, the fellow will have ample opportunity to participate and present in multiple gynecologic pathology conferences throughout the program. The fellow will be expected to organize, prepare, and present for the breast and gynecologic interdisciplinary tumor board conferences by the end of the year. In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to attend and participate in surgical pathology conferences, cytopathology conferences, and journal club throughout the year.

Experience in quality management, laboratory management, and teaching junior residents are also part of the fellowship. The fellow will assume responsibility commensurate with their level of training experience, and all fellows are expected to participate in scholarly activities leading to publication.

Requirements

Candidates must be board certified or board eligible in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic/Clinical Pathology. Candidates must be eligible for a Texas Physician-In-Training Permit or hold a full physician Texas licensure.
