Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
The Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology aims to translate big genomic data, epigenomic data, and genome-wide RNA expression data into scientific insights and clinical knowledge for precision medicine.
We are in an era in which leading medicine requires the combination of genome-wide systematic studies with targeted biomedical investigation. Millions of high-throughput sequencing datasets have been generated in recent years. As an example, the Gene Expression Omnibus database has deposited functional genomic datasets generated from several million different samples. An enormous volume of biomedical information is embedded in these samples, yet most of these data have been incompletely analyzed. Analyzing such high throughput data requires professional bioinformatics expertise and computational resources, and is an overwhelming challenge to many biomedical scientists.
The Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is a research team with strong interdisciplinary expertise in artificial intelligence, computation and statistics, with applications to biology and medicine. Our researchers in computational biology will deliver new technologies to accelerate and enhance the interpretation of big data. In addition, the center provides computational biology expertise in numerous research collaborations with individual departments across Houston Methodist. Together, the center is committed to gaining novel biomedical insights from the next generation sequencing data and effectively delivering these insights to clinical medicine.
