Houston Methodist St. John Hospital is unveiling three new investments in technology that will significantly enhance patient diagnosis and treatment.
The hospital recently completed the purchase and installation of a da Vinci® robotic surgical system; an ultra-modern Discovery® nuclear medicine scanner; and a best-in-class 3 Tesla, wide-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine – the most powerful and comfortable unit available today.
To celebrate the addition of the da Vinci robotic system and its other new technology, Houston Methodist St. John is hosting an open house and reception for the public on April 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bay Area residents will have the opportunity to meet the hospital’s surgical team and try their hand at operating the da Vinci. Light refreshments will be served.
“Investments in new technology play a major role in our efforts to continue providing the most advanced care possible,” said Dan Newman, CEO. “The da Vinci system, Discovery nuclear scanner and wide-bore MRI offer significant benefits for both our physicians and patients, and we are proud to make them available to the community.
The da Vinci system, developed by Intuitive Surgical, allows surgeons to operate with greater control than possible with traditional surgery. The system’s tiny instruments can rotate and bend much more than the human hand, giving the surgeon a wider range of motion and allowing for the smallest possible incisions. The da Vinci system also features 3D, high-definition visualization, providing a clearer, wider view of the surgical area.
For patients, surgery with da Vinci means shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, less need for pain medication, faster recoveries and less scarring.
As part of the open house, Houston Methodist St. John Hospital is conducting a “Name the Robot” contest for its new da Vinci system, with the winner receiving an Apple Watch! Bay Area residents can enter to win at houstonmethodist.org/stjohnrobot. Entries must be submitted by April 5, 2017; the winner will be announced at the reception on April 25.
The hospital’s new MRI offers superior image quality, making it easier for physicians to identify disease and injury of the organs, soft tissues and bones. For patients, it provides a spacious imaging platform with more room than open MRIs, including a short tunnel that allows feet-first entry for most exams. And no more claustrophobia – depending on their scan, most patients will be able to keep their head outside of the machine. MRI appointments are available seven days per week and can be made by calling 281.333.8858 or by visiting houstonmethodist.org/appointments
The new Discovery nuclear medicine camera delivers superior image quality across a wide range of medical specialties and uses doses as low as half those of conventional scanners while reducing patients’ testing time.
