Cytopathology Fellowship
Houston Methodist Hospital, an affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College and Texas A&M Medical College, offers an ACGME-accredited cytopathology fellowship training program for physicians who have completed pathology specialty training and are interested in pursuing a career in the subspecialty of cytopathology and related research. Houston Methodist Hospital is located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world. It is the center of a seven hospital, 2,000-bed system that performs more than 3.9 million billable tests annually. The hospital offers a full range of services from primary to tertiary care, including a multi-organ transplant center and cancer center.
The teaching faculty in the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist are internationally renowned with expertise in major subspecialty areas of both anatomic and clinical pathology. The program has eleven board-certified cytopathologists and three additional experienced anatomic pathologists with subspecialty interest in cytopathology.
Two one-year fellowship positions are available each academic year under the directorship of Michael J. Thrall, MD. The program includes rotations at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Harris County Ben Taub General Hospital. A large volume of gynecologic, non-gynecologic and fine needle aspiration materials are available for daily sign out. Ample opportunities for performing and interpreting fine needle aspirations are available at all three sites. A short rotation is also available in the Department of Radiology at Houston Methodist Hospital. In gynecologic cytology, the program offers conventional, ThinPrep and SurePath training, as well as cytology-histology correlation on dysplasia, in both high-risk and low-risk populations. Training in laboratory management, information systems, and quality assurance is included in all rotations of the program. Scholarly activity in the form of a research project to be completed under faculty supervision for publication is a requirement. Fellows are responsible for the cytopathology conference at Houston Methodist Hospital and have the opportunity to attend various surgical pathology and clinical pathology conferences.
Requirements
Candidates must be board certified or board eligible in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic/Clinical Pathology. Candidates must be eligible for a Texas Physician-In-Training Permit or hold a full physician Texas licensure.
Stipend
Commensurate with level of postgraduate training.
